August 7 Gates Open: 7:00PM * Show Starts: 8:00PM
The legendary Glenn Miller was one of the most successful bandleaders during the Swing Era of the 1930's and '40's. The Glenn Miller Orchestra made a big impact right before and during the war. In 1941, with hits like Chattanooga Choo Choo and A String of Pearls, the Glenn Miller Orchestra had more hit records in one year than anyone ever in the history of the recording industry. Glenn Miller disbanded his orchestra in 1942 to volunteer for the Army, and organized the Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band. In December of 1944, Major Glenn Miller took off in a single engine plane from England to precede his band in France, never to be seen again. He was declared officially dead by the Army one year later. Due to popular demand after the successful motion picture "The Glenn Miller Story", starring Jimmy Stewart and June Allyson, the Miller Estate authorized the formation of the present Glenn Miller Orchestra in 1956. The Glenn Miller Orchestra has always been very musical, disciplined, and visually entertaining. The 19 member band, under the current direction of bandleader Larry O'Brien, continues to play many of the original Miller arrangements, including “In The Mood”, “A Sentimental Journey”, “Tuxedo Junction”, “Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree”, and “Moonlight Serenade”, in addition to more modern selections. The entire repertoire, which now exceeds over 1,700 compositions, keeps the band popular with both young and old.
